What is Ponstan used for?
Ponstan® (mefenamic acid) is indicated for the relief of symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (chronic inflammation of the "joints" caused by autoimmune reactions, when the body's defense system mistakenly attacks itself), osteoarthritis (chronic damage to the joints), pain (muscular, traumatic, dental, headache of various origins, post-operative and postpartum), primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps), menorrhagia (very heavy menstrual flow) due to dysfunctional causes (there is no damage to the reproductive system organs, such as the uterus and ovaries) or due to the use of an IUD (intrauterine device), and premenstrual syndrome.
How do I use Pontan?
ORAL USE
For adult and pediatric use above 14 years of age.
Ponstan® can be taken with meals (which is recommended if the medication causes gastric discomfort).
Mild to moderate pain/rheumatoid arthritis/osteoarthritis in adults and pediatric patients over 14 years of age:
1 tablet (500 mg), 3 times a day.
Dysmenorrhea, Menorrhagia, Premenstrual Syndrome:
1 tablet (500 mg), 3 times a day, administered at the beginning of menstruation and symptoms, and continued according to medical advice.
Follow your doctor's instructions, always respecting the times, doses, and duration of treatment. Do not interrupt treatment without your doctor's knowledge.
This medicine should not be broken, opened, or chewed.
When should I not use Pontan?
Ponstan® should not be used by people who: (1) have had hypersensitivity (allergy) to the medication or to any component of the formula; (2) are allergic to acetylsalicylic acid or other anti-inflammatory drugs nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) manifested by the appearance, after the use of these... medications , for: bronchospasm (wheezing), allergic rhinitis (inflammation of the nostril that causes the nose to run abundantly) or reddish skin lesions with itching, (3) have an active ulcer or chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract (in the esophagus, stomach and intestines); (4) have pain due to coronary artery bypass graft surgery (saphenous vein or mammary artery bypass surgery for coronary obstruction); (5) have kidney, liver or heart failure (impaired function).
This medication is contraindicated for children under 14 years of age.
